Airspace Obstruction Lighting – NEW Rules Take Effect on January 1, 2026

It’s getting close! On January 1, 2026, the Swedish Transport Agency’s regulations (TSFS 2020:88) will take effect. This means that if you own an air obstacle, you now have your last chance to ensure that your obstacle lights comply with the new regulations.

What does this mean for you as the owner of an obstacle to air navigation?

Most obstruction lights with LED technology installed before 2017 most likely do not have an IR (infrared) function. These must therefore be replaced. This requirement applies to low-intensity, medium-intensity, and high-intensity obstruction lights.

Who is responsible for ensuring that the labeling complies with the regulations?

Obstruction lights are a safety-critical function and must be reliable. The operator or owner of the aviation obstruction is responsible for ensuring that the installation complies with applicable rules and regulations.

What requirements must be met?

  • All active obstacle lights must emit infrared light at approximately 850 nm.

  • Medium- and high-intensity obstacle lights must be monitored in real time.

  • Medium-intensity obstacle lights must flash at a rate of 20–60 bpm and have a luminous intensity of 2,000 cd during the day, at dusk, and at night.

  • Medium- and high-intensity obstruction lights must be synchronized with the flashing obstruction lights on nearby objects.

Recommendations

If there is a risk of frost or ice formation, it is recommended that the obstruction lights be equipped with an automatic de-icing function in accordance with TSFS 2020:88.
